Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams
I’m a huge fan of magical realism. What I enjoy the most about magical realism is the seamless mixture of fantastical elements into everyday occurrences which allow for deeper explorations of our realities. One of my favorite films in this genre is Dreams by Akira Kurosawa (1990). I first saw it when I was around 17 years old, and it fully went over my head. I then revisited later on in life, and fell in love with it! The cinematography is beautiful, the colors, the sounds and music, and the stories, all come together in a meditative and visually stunning way.
Dreams is a collection of 8 short films: Sunshine Through The Rain, The Peach Orchard, The Blizzard, The Tunnel, Crows, Mount Fuji in Red, The Weeping Demon, and Village of the Watermills. Here is The Peach Orchard:
I strongly encourage you to watch some of Kurosawa’s films. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them. If you already have, what are your favorite ones?
