Shoot what you love

For a photographer, at any level, that’s the sentence that you need to say over and over to yourself. “I need to shoot what I love”. Shooting what you love brings out your true passion for the craft, shows a level of interest and insight to your subject matter and makes the overall sell of the final product an easy one.

Lately I’ve been pushing my personal work to a new level, bringing my camera out to places that I normally wouldn’t bring my pro rig, and it’s been generating a whole new portfolio of images that I’m enthusiastically showing.

Whether it’s film or digital, point and shoot or DSLR, or even your iPhone, it’s important to do what you love with the tools you have at hand. The best camera is always the one you have with you and if you shoot with passion and choose subject matter that you love, you’ll always be enthusiastic about showing you work.

Being a professional photographer is an emotional roller coaster at times. It can be waves of riding the highest high, shooting big campaigns and editorials, or waves of no work which could lead to depression or being too busy sometimes leads to creative drain. If you aren’t shooting what you love, it’s nearly impossible to stay inspired. Focus your efforts on specializing. Fashion, portraits, still life or sports all have viable career posibilites.

Keeping a balance of creativity and inspiration as well as outward reach and promotion is a career long goal.

Shoot what you love.

Carty.
